AsianAmericanVoters.org co-hosted a seminar on School Assignment with PPS-SF for immigrant families at Hoover Middle School
About 70 parents and students of the school district attended the seminar on a stormy night at Hoover Middle School. PPS-SF made detailed explanation in Cantonese on the assignment process and encouraged families to continue with the engagement. PPS-SF also shared enrollment and assignment statistics and collected feedback. AsianAmericanVoters.org provided English translation to a dozen members who were English speakers. AsianAmericanVoters.org also served pizzas and hot tea. Many families left with more confidence than before attending the seminar. What a collaborated success!
Asians & STEM
Did you know that Asian immigrants and Americans go into STEM fields in droves, not just because we are good at it, but it is the best way to avoid job discrimination? "Tiger parents" had figured out long ago that no one would avoid taking the train just because the railroad was built by Chinese immigrants, or go around a bridge just because it was engineered by Asian Americans.
While we are actively promoting STEM fields as a short term stop gap measure, we are working with other communities to fight discrimination head on in the long term.
